DESCRIPTION
Achieving Balance chronicles the removal of the Black Rat from Anacapa Island and reveals the profound results of recovery that follow on the island ecosystem. The seabirds on Anacapa Island were in significant decline due to predation by the non-native Black Rat. In order to restore balance to the Anacapa Island ecosystem, a group of non-profit, government, and educational organizations came together to remove these predators in 2001 and 2002. The project at the time was chronicled in the film Restoring Balance, produced and directed by Kevin White, and narrated by John Cleese.
Ten years after removing the non-native rats, the ecosystem on Anacapa Island, including rare seabirds, is showing profound results of recovery. The film is featured on the Channel Islands National Park website and in the Channel Islands National Park Visitor Center. The DVD includes both Restoring Balance and Achieving Balance.
